TV Series Review: Eastwick
Jenna Hathaway
For those who are familiar with the various movies or books that go by the title The Witches of Eastwick, this new TV series that premiered in the fall of 2009 is just another adaptation of the famous story about three women in the town of Eastwick who mysteriously get magical powers at around the same time a mysterious man named Darryl Van Horne appears among them. InĀ Eastwick, our main characters are Roxie Torcoletti, a single mother who loves to paint and is believed to bring bad luck to all men who are romantically involved with her; Kat Gardener, a nurse with a family of her own who spends her whole life taking care of everyone else; and Joanna Frankel, a shy reporter for the local newspaper who never quite knows how to land a date with the photographer she has long had a crush on.
One fateful day the three women made a wish on a fountain at the exact same time, and that was when things got interesting. A rich man with a mysterious background moved into town and somehow brought the three of them together. Then, the girls start discovering that they have magical powers. Roxie can see visions of the future, Kat seems to have control over nature, and Joanna can make men do things she commands them to. They discover even more powers as the series progresses and they finally realize just how special they are.
In a way, this series would please mostĀ Charmed fans as there are a few similar things in the premise. Even though the girls aren’t sisters, they have the same bond and have conquered many “evils” together, although they don’t always take the most obvious forms. Sadly the network never did give it much chance to bloom, because while I personally adore the series and wish to see many more of the girls’ adventures, the series has been canceled after only one season and would not be renewed for a second one. Still, it offers drama, comedy, fun, action, mystery, suspense, and absolutely anything for all types of audiences. The show has that carefree, whimsical and magical let-yourself-go-for-one-night atmosphere that makes it perfect for something to watch when you just want pure entertainment without much expectation and still feel good afterward. There aren’t that many episodes (only 13 in total) since it’s been canceled, but I’d say this show is worth watching. It might not be brilliant or compelling, but it’s light and fun. So as long as you don’t expect too much, you’re guaranteed a fun night of television.
