The LEGO Movie

April 2014 Prof. Scarlet Leslie

I spent countless hours playing with Legos when I was younger, so you can imagine my excitement when I learned that there would be a Lego movie. Well, unfortunately, no one else seemed to share that excitement and I could not find anyone to go watch the movie with me. I ended up watching it online and loving it and deciding I needed to see it in better quality... And off to the movies I went!

Emmet Brickowski (Chris Pratt) is an ordinary construction worker, who follows an instruction manual to get through everyday life. This all changes when a women named Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) is searching for something at the construction site after hours. Emmet falls through a hole and literally gets stuck to the Piece of Resistance. He finds himself in the custody of Bad Cop - Good Cop (Liam Neesom). Through the questioning sequence, Emmet discovers that President Business (Will Ferrell) plans to use the Kragle to freeze everything in Bricksburg.

Wyldstyle comes to rescue Emmet. He soon learns about the existence of other Lego worlds, including the Wild West and Cloud Cuckooland. Wyldstyle brings Emmet to meet the wizard Vitruvius (Morgan Freeman) who prophesied that there would be a "Special" that finds the Piece of Resistance - the only thing capable of stopping the Kragle. Vitruvius and Wyldstyle are Master Builders, who can build anything they need without instruction manuals. Emmet meets the rest of the Master Builders to get help to stop President Business's evil plan.

I highly recommend this movie. The plot is believable and actually quite touching at points. There is a delightful mix of cleverness and corniness. I absolutely loved President Business's relics, especially the Sword of Exact Zero (an X-Acto knife!). I have probably seen it at least five times by now, but there are still little details that I catch upon each viewing, like a robot minion quickly exiting out of his game of solitaire at work.

Warner Brothers owns the rights to DC Comics, so characters from that universe made it into the movie (sorry, no Loki!). Superman (Channing Tatum) is slightly harassed by Green Lantern (Jonah Hill). Batman (Will Arnett) plays a major role as part of Emmet's primary group. Wonder Woman (Colbie Smulders) rounds out the Justice League.

Dumbledore has a cameo! Oddly enough, a wizard (of all people) confuses him with Gandalf. If you have taken my Art Appreciation class, you can probably picture my smile when both Michelangelo the artist and Michelangelo the Ninja Turtle were introduced as Master Builders. NBA Superstars, including Shaquille O'Neal, make an appearance. And a few Star Wars actors even lend their voices and reprise their roles!

There is constant movement as Legos are being shifted and reconstructed. You will be surprised to see how much you can build with Legos. The wordplay and dialogue moves just as fast. Also, to the annoyance of all those around you, this movie will leave you singing, "Everything is awesome....!!!"
