Fall Trends
Hello, all you fashionistas! Along with cooler temperatures, a whole round of holidays, and the return of Muggle football (all of which this witch is most grateful for, I assure you!), it is time for the all-important fall season and the debut of this year's hottest trends. After scouring the runways, here are the top 10 looks sure to keep you looking your best as we say goodbye to summer and break out the 'cool weather' wear.
Winter White
Head-to-toe winter white was everywhere on the runway this season. Decidedly different from its lighter 'summer cousin', this nevertheless makes a very dramatic statement and is sure to turn heads. The good news is that it looks flattering on just about every skin tone, so I would definitely invest in at least one good outfit.
Knit Beanies
Knit Beanies are not just for 'tweens and weekends anymore. According to the latest fashion scoop, they can be paired with everything from office wear to the trendiest party outfit. In fact, the contrast between the 'formality' of those outfits and the casualness of the beanie actually adds to the coolness of it!
Classic Patterns
Designers seem to be taking a break from over-the-top prints and returning to fashion's classic roots when it comes to patterns. Leopard, plaid, and pinstripes all made an appearance, but the clear winner was houndstooth. It came in a variety of colors and textures, not just the usual black-and-white, though that was plentiful, to be certain, and was seen in everything from skirts to jackets, shoes, and hats. You name it, it was on it. I guess you could say fashion has really gone 'to the dogs.'
Over-the-knee Boots
I seriously love this one! I had the good fortune to indulge in a New York shopping trip recently and got the most killer pair of boots - anyway, I digress. This fall, boots go long; but if it's not your thing, not to worry. Take a leaf from the book of top designers Altuzarra and J Brand (among others), whose runway models sported ankle boots and leather leggings instead. Or, heck, why not go all out and get both?!
Turtlenecks
If patterns went to the hounds, then necks are the domain of the turtle. Turtlenecks are the 'big thing' this fall. As a cozy layering piece, they really cannot be beat, and despite the not-so-cool reputation they tend to unfortunately get, I cannot help but be reminded of Audrey Hepburn every time I think of them. I sincerely doubt anyone would dare call her unfashionable, right?!
Shades of Green
Forget grey, it's green that rules the day this fall. Whether it be emerald, army, lime, or any shade in between, green is the color to have. Channel your inner leprechaun and march forth!
Slouchy Pants
No, I am not talking pants-on-the-ground-wanna-be-thug slouchy pants, Merlin forbid! I am talking uber chic pants that are cut slightly narrow at the ankles and sit high on the hips. Paired with a pair of heels (or boots), they look simply smashing! Designers (thank goodness!), after several seasons, have seen fit to give the loud, tight-cropped pants a rest; these, along with the more relaxed fit, are much more subdued in pattern as well.
Statement Outerwear
No boring coats were to be seen this year on the runway. These showstoppers were definitely not meant to be merely serviceable pieces, but were meant to be seen, as much a part of the fashion wardrobe as the garment underneath. Ranging from the luxurious to the bizarre, they were definitely anything but ordinary.
Folk-Inspired Pieces
I have to admit I was a bit skeptical of this one, as 'folk' can go wrong in so many ways very quickly. But these pieces honestly were a pleasant surprise, given an urban spin when the folk design was placed strategically on a black background. Just remember; a little goes a long way, and this is the 21st century. The object is to be 'folk-inspired,' not the costume version of something. Unless you are going to a costume party, of course. Then, feel free to dress like Gretel from Germany or Heidi the Swiss Maid. Otherwise, for fashion's sake, refrain, I beg of you.
Rounded Shoulders
Feminine and fashion-forward, rounded shoulders work on a variety of levels. If you are a novice to the trend, or just want to dabble in it, I would suggest something like a drop-sleeve sweatshirt. For those who already like the trend, or are of a bit more daring nature, why not opt for a cocoon coat or a dress with statement sleeves? This is a trend you can really have fun with and make your own.
And there you have it; now you have no excuse not to look your best this fall season! No more hiding under those school robes, and no, House pride is NOT an acceptable excuse. Now why are you still sitting here, hmm? There is shopping to be done!
