Kwality Kwidditch
My first quidditch column of the year normally covers all of the fun activities that occurred during SQL the previous summer. However, with there not being much to cover there and other events happening related to quidditch, I decided to focus on something a bit more Ravenclaw-centric. After over four years of captaining the Ravenclaw Quidditch Team, I announced my resignation this summer.
A lot of people do not realize the work and time it takes to be a good captain of a winning team. If a captain is lazy or disappears, the team suffers. If a player is freaking out or having a rough time, the captain has to help them. During games captains are normally playing, dealing with the hijinks of refchan, and talking to various players.
After two years as captain, of all of this along with dealing with the special type of politics that comes with dealing with people involved with running quidditch, had begun to take its toll. Resigning had been on my mind since the previous summer, but I decided to stick it out last year and keep an eye open for possible replacements. At the end of this year, I knew that I could no longer take some of the duties that came along with captaining a team. I had a few replacements in mind, but I waited to see how they would handle SQL.
Around mid-summer, however, I realized that I could not delay the announcement any longer while waiting on things to get going. Instead, I told Arielle of my decision and we began our talks of who would take my spot. We agreed on the main candidates. They had different qualities that would make them all great captains. Some knew the game better, some had the stronger backbone to stand up for what is right for quidditch and for the team. After a few weeks, Arielle and I settled on Amy Charz to replace me.
Even though I often tease her and claim to dislike her, I actually think Amy is a great person. I think she has the knowledge, will, dedication, and perseverance to make a great co-captain along with Arielle Lemoyne. Knowing that I could leave RQT in capable hands made my decision to resign all that much easier.
While I was completely sure about my decision to resign and I do not regret it in the least, it was a bit difficult to tell the team of my decision. Having held the position since the end of my first year, every member of RQT at the time of my resignation joined the team while I was captain. I have watched them go from eager first years to crazy botting maniacs.
Despite the efforts of some, the drama and politics that accompany quidditch have never and will never ruin the memories I have made with the wonderful, dedicated members of RQT. The kind words from members of the team and people from other houses when I announced my resignation reminded me of the good that comes with captaining a team. I may no longer be captain, but I will always be around to support and cheer on RQT to the fullest. I look forward to watching Arielle and Amy lead RQT to more successful years, to Pavel breaking his own record for the most goals in a game, to Scarlet recruiting more and more seekers until Ravenclaw has a seeking army, to Mattie constantly surprising people with her crazy knowledge and skills, to Edmund getting a proper shut out, to plotting against Three with Kaiwa, and to watching Sandy, Shiloh, Sophia, Rhiannon, Kat, Lizzy, and Robin improve and turn into monsters themselves. And I look forward to writing this column throughout the year discussing all of the triumphs and goals of the always impressive RQT!
